Our Rochester, New York office is currently seeking a Junior Geologist with a strong technical background to support a variety of projects within our environmental due diligence/remediation and renewable energy practices. Our energy practice includes routing, siting, and permitting of wind and solar energy power generation, electric transmission lines and substations, natural gas pipelines, and other related facilities. Our environmental due diligence practice includes preparing Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, environmental sampling and monitoring of long-term remediation projects. The position requires a combination of field and office work and will be based out of our Rochester, New York office. We are looking for an enthusiastic geologist with environmental sampling and technical report writing experience. The position requires proficiency in task management, including data collection, data management, and technical writing. Candidates will have relevant skills and ideally experience preparing cost estimates and technical approaches for related work. Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental sampling of soil, surface water, ground water, soil vapor and air matrices.
  • Preparation of Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments
  • Write technical reports and proposals.
  • Review reports and proposals prepared by peers.
  • Develop cost estimates for geology tasks for a range of projects.
  • Work concurrently on several projects each at different phases. Requirements:
    • Expertise in collecting environmental samples in a variety of media.
    • Experience preparing Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)
    • Experience in writing technical reports, describing baseline conditions, and evaluating analytical sampling results in a variety of media.
    • Experience writing proposals and estimating costs.
    • Ability to research and interpret federal, state, and local regulations and environmental cleanup criteria.
    • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field.
    • Willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions and often miles from a vehicle. Physical challenges typically encountered may include off-trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions, and biological hazards (animals and plants).
    • Safety conscience and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards.
    • Data management and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
    • Able to work with and communicate with a diverse group of co-workers and clients to provide high quality and efficient work products.
    • A valid driver's license and clean driving record is required for this position.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions. Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
      • Bachelor's degree in geology or related field of study.
      • 3 - 5 years of experience.
      • A strong background of coursework and/or experience in a geologic science (field data collection. Completion of an undergraduate geology field camp is desired. -
      • Demonstrated ability to perform data analyses, compile data, and write technical documents.
      • Demonstrated ability to use and create spreadsheets or databases to summarize data and create tables.
      • Comfortable with mobile technology (e.g., cell phone, tablet) for electronic data collection. Other Desirable Knowledge and Experience:
        • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoyment of working outdoors.
        • Ability to effectively manage data utilizing ArcGIS or related geographic information system software.
