Senior Associate Job ID 233803 Location School of Medicine & Dentistry Full/Part Time Full-Time Favorite Job Regular/Temporary Regular Opening Faculty job description The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester is seeking candidates for a Certified Genetic Counselor to join or faculty and fill the role of Ocular Genetics Counselor as a member of the Ocular Genetics Team at the Flaum Eye Institute and Golisano Children's Hospital under the supervision of the Ocular Genetics Program Director, Jenina Capasso, and Ocular Geneticist, and Chief of Pediatric Genetics, Dr. Alex Levin. We are particularly interested in candidates with prior experience in ocular genetics. We also favor applicants who have prior experience in the development of state licensure. The successful candidate will coordinate and attend ocular genetics clinics including the care of pediatric and adult patients. They will support , Dr. Levin and Dr. Vikas Khetan (ocular geneticist and ocular oncologist). Clinical areas will include hereditary retinal diseases and ocular oncology. Close interaction with other genetic counselors and geneticists in the Division of Pediatric Genetics at Golisano Children's and the ophthalmologists and personnel at Flaum Eye will be part of the daily work. Duties include pre-visit history taking, pedigree creation and risk assessment, pre- and post-genetic testing counseling, selection and coordination of genetic testing, informed consent for testing and research, interpreting and conveying test results while managing psychosocial impact, interaction with family support groups, and literature review. The candidate will attend weekly team meetings where cases are reviewed and discussed. Teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows is expected including participation in journal clubs, and other conferences. Continuing education is also supported. Other opportunities include leadership in an international genetic counselor development program with the chance to teach nationally and internationally. The candidate will be expected to teach in our new MSGC program at the University. Clinical research and publication is also part of this role along with coordination of collaborative research within the University and at centers elsewhere around the role including gene discovery, gene therapy and registry development and maintenance. Candidates should have a Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an ACGC Accredited Program, and should be ABGC board-certified, or board-eligible and plan to take the exam within the first year of employment. Applicants should have excellent communication skills in regards to both patients and colleagues, enjoy working with children of all ages as well as adult, and be capable of utilizing electronic medical record systems.
