JOB TITLE: CLINICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT 2 - VERSION 7

MAIN FUNCTIONS:

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 (CLA 2) is responsible for performing the non-technical tasks, as assigned, within the Laboratory. These include, but are not limited to: routine phlebotomy, special collection procedures, rapid patient registration on the HIS, full patient registration on the HIS, ordering of Laboratory procedures on the HIS and/or LIS, courier routes, nursing home draws, home phlebotomy, accessioning specimens, reference ordering of supplies, stocking of supplies, ordering of Pap Smears, preparing mailers, performing point-of-care testing at AMS offices when providing coverage.

  1. CORE COMPETENCIES:

a. Organizes and prioritizes workload.

b. Is familiar with and maintains all regulations appropriate to assigned duties and is ready for unannounced inspections by staff, local, state, and/or federal regulatory agencies. This includes, but is not limited to: Medical Center, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.

c. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.

d. Maintains a courteous and helpful rapport when dealing with patients, physicians, nurses, supervisors, visitors, coworkers, and other employees of the Medical Center. In patient relations, maintains respect for the individual. Communicates in a friendly manner. Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner. Works toward solutions to problems rather than complaining.

e. Appearance is always in compliance with dress codes as defined in the Laboratory and Medical Center policy manuals. Wears Medical Center name tag in appropriate location.

f. Respects the privacy of all patients and employees. Medical, financial, or other information is only accessed or discussed as necessary to perform required duties.

g. Contributes individual value to the operation of the Laboratory by reporting to work on all scheduled days. Ensures continuous coverage of the Laboratory at all times by accepting work assignments, such as shift assignments, overtime, or work station scheduling changes as defined by Laboratory and Medical Center policy.

h. Is familiar with, and applies all Corporate Compliance policies and procedures related to the position.

i. Is responsible for bringing unusual situations to the attention of the CLA Supervisor, or, in his absence, another section supervisor or the Administrative Director of the Laboratory.

j. Attends continuing education and staff meetings as appropriate ; participates and documents a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education per year.

k. Provides age appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

OPERATIONAL COMPETENCIES:

CLA 2 is an entry level position for new hires who have completed the BOCES Phlebotomy Course or the equivalent in training or who have a minimum of 3 months of phlebotomy experience. It is a grade increase for employees who have completed the requirements of a CLA 1. Advancement to CLA 3 is dependent on learning and applying a total of at least 6 of the skills listed below (training and skill mix is dependent on departmental needs). The minimum time in this step is 1 year.

  2. Performs all required Rapid Patient Registration/Ordering Laboratory Procedures as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  3. Performs all required Miscellaneous Office Functions as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  4. Performs all required Special Collection Procedures as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  5. Performs all required Courier duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  6. Performs all required Nursing Home Draw duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  7. Performs all required Accessioning Specimen duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  8. Performs all required Reference Laboratory Specimen Preparation duties as outlined in CLA Competency Checklist.

  9. Performs all required 24 Hour Urine Volume duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  10. Performs all required Specimen Tracking duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  11. Performs all required Inventory Control duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  12. Performs all required Stocking Supplies duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  13. Performs all required Ordering Pap Smear duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  14. Performs all required Home Phlebotomy duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  15. Performs all required AMS/HCFW Coverage duties as outlined in the CLA Competency Checklist.

  16. Understands that work in the Laboratory is dynamic and that the duties of a CLA will change over time as regulatory requirements and the general environment of healthcare changes; performs other duties as assigned.

OTHER:

  1. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to provide a copy of clean DMV record. May be assigned tasks involving the use of a company vehicle such as courier or home day duties. Employees are expected to abide by all traffic laws while driving a company vehicle.

  2. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  3. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the

customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive

to the customer's needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative

to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant

experience with the Arnot Health.

EDUCATION:

High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of training and/or work experience in health care or data processing helpful but not mandatory.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

CPR required for staff who have patient contact within 90 days of hire date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical effort required. Moderately heavy objects lifted. Moderate reaching. Much bending and stooping. Required to be on one's feet much of the time.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
