Perform procedures and treatments under the direction of a provider based on training, education and competency. Collaborate with the provider in planning, providing and documenting patient care in correlation with the Nursing Process. Maintain optimum patient flow by keeping exam rooms occupied with patients during office hours. Responsibilities: 1). Coordination of care: Preemptively review provider's schedule. This includes identifying which patients require an updated Pain Management Agreement and if any of the scheduled patients were previously seen in the hospital/urgent care and/or emergency room. If so, need to obtain all chart notes, labs and/or x-rays so provider can review the results with the patient during office visit. Also need to review previous chart note to ensure all requested labs, procedures, etc have been completed and results are in the electronic medical record. 2). Routine Screening Procedures: Place patients in examination room and prepare patient for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; perform and record all vital signs; do urinalysis, pregnancy test and blood glucose as needed. Any acute/sick visit - record patient's temperature. Verify patient information by interviewing patient; recording medical history and confirming purpose of visit. If CPE, prepare patient for EKG and confirm labs were done and are in EMR. Provide the patient with gown and sheet to allow examination. Have patient ready to see provider with access to area of concern. All diabetics - remove shoes/socks. All equipment for pap smears laid out. Review patient's chart to identify need for injections. Prepare flu vaccines so they can be administered by LPN or MD. Prepare the vaccines below to be administered by the LPN or MD as ordered. --Pneumovax --Hepatitis A and B -- -- -- --Tdap --Insulin and Ceftriaxone -- -- --Zostavax Information sheets are to be given with each vaccine. Perform routine office procedures and testing in the ambulatory setting as listed below; report results to provider. Responsible for cleaning utensils, sterilize (autoclaving) surgical instruments. --Pulmonary Function Tests -- -- --EKG's Nebulizer Treatments -- -- -- --Pap Smears -- -- -- -- -- --Chaperoning breast and rectal exams --Ear irrigation Ordering of TENS units -- 3). Triage: Nursing support for providers, patients and office staff. Office staff: Triage phone calls and EMR triage requests from front staff Providers: Notify provider verbally of emergent patient needs. Triage phone calls and EMR triage requests from providers. Process all prior authorization requests for medications - researching, calling and faxing of medical information to insurance companies. Faxing of medical information to other doctor's offices as requested. Patients: ? Prescription line: retrieve messages and coordinate prescription refill requests throughout the day. Optimally done every hour, not to exceed 2-hour timeline. ? Communicate with patients regarding lab, medication changes and other test results via phone or email. ? Call patients with Coumadin changes - update "to do list" of current changes/doses in EMR. Set up home draws. 4). Quality Control: Ordering and stocking of medical supplies including vaccines and paper products through electronic ordering system. ? Ensure exam rooms and bathrooms are fully stocked a minimum of twice per week and more frequently if needed. ? As needed, coordinate with LPN to maintain and order medical supplies to ensure adequate inventory without overstocking. Inventory stock; place orders; verify receipt. ? Ensure medical waste is disposed of appropriately. ? Discarded needles and other sharps placed in drop box. ? Odorous material sealed in small bag and placed in drop box. ? When full, sharp containers should be moved to storage closet for pick-up by Advo Waste Management for proper disposal. Flu Clinics ? Updating Flu Vaccine Information Line ? Schedule Flu Clinic Hours ? In conjunction with LPN, order flu vaccine yearly for the fall flu season ? Meet with LPN, Practice Manager and vendors to evaluate products/pricing as needed Equipment maintenance: Follow operating instructions; trouble shoot breakdowns; maintain supplies; perform preventative maintenance and call for repairs. ? Check and record temperature of refrigerator holding vaccines on a weekly basis ? Monthly maintenance checks of the crash cart and defibrillator ? Calling/coordinating equipment inspections annually ? Monthly maintenance checks for on-site oxygen tanks ? Expiration dates for pharmaceuticals ? Maintaining/scheduling lunch hour meetings with drug reps ? Contacting drug reps when providers request specific samples ? All medication/shots that are drawn up and removed from original packaging must be labeled. e.g. Flu vaccine OSHA Training ? Maintain regulatory and internal compliance of issues/records for OSHA ? Ensure employees receive annual OSHA training and exam as a group Fire Drill Protocol ? Responsible for patient evacuation in event of fire 5). Home Care Services ? Liaison between agency and Physician ? Liaison to home care agencies (HCR, VNS, Lifetime, etc) to refer patients for home care including home oxygen (Rochester Oxygen, Apria, Monroe, American Home Patient) ? Complete and coordinate all necessary paperwork so service can be delivered. ? Take messages, return calls. 6). Administrative --Greeting patients --Obtaining prior authorizations for medications --Handling correspondence related to prior authorizations medication requests --Taking and returning pharmacy phone calls for medication related questions --Taking and returning patient phone calls for medically related questions Taking patient photo for EMR --Other duties upon request 7). HIPAA Access Rights --The minimum set of privileges required for individuals to perform this job function. This job position may interact with patient protected health information in any or all of the following ways: View, write, copy, use, disclose, destroy, hear, fax, create, edit, transport/transmit. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Education: --High school graduate or equivalent GED and completion of Medical Assistant program preferred. Minimum Experience: --Six months previous experience in an office or clinic setting with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR). One-year experience with Medent EMR strongly preferred. Required Skills: --Candidates must have strong clinical skills and be able to work well with patients, doctors and other staff. Position requires the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and cope with a busy, fast-paced work environment. Candidates must develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time. Candidates must be flexible and adaptable. Computer Skills: --Demonstrated competence using e-prescribing and electronic medical records for patient care. Physical Demands: --Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
