Job Description:
Department : Learning & Engagement Direct Supervisor: Jess Hays,
Conservation Program Manager FLSA Status: Non-exempt Hourly Wage:
$16.50 - $17.50 Working Hours: Part time, average of no more than
32 hours per week throughout the summer season. Must be available
weekends and evenings. Weekly hours fluctuate with the number of
programs. JOB SUMMARY The Seasonal Zoo Naturalist inspires our
guests to take conservation action and is responsible for
facilitating numerous and varied programs, both onsite and offsite,
along with engaging in meaningful conversations with guests.
Programs consist of public speaking, including ambassador animal
handling and training, along with community science conservation
action in the field. The work schedule may include flexible hours,
weekends, weekdays, evenings, holidays and extended hours in order
to meet the needs of the organization. DUTIES Present, support or
facilitate a variety of programs. Engage, inform, and inspire
guests throughout the Zoo in the times between scheduled programs.
Work with and clearly communicate with Zoo staff, Docents,
Volunteers, ZooTeens, and other stakeholders to maintain program
quality. Use bio-facts, animal exhibits, interpretives, and
materials to engage guests and answer guest questions. Recognize
different audience types and adjust engagement strategies
accordingly. Interact with ambassador animals, including training,
packing, handling, transporting and presenting. Assist in
facilitating community science programs off Zoo grounds including
maintaining butterfly gardens, nature hikes, and community
clean-ups which may include handling hazardous materials. Support
other organizational tasks as needed. TECHNOLOGY/EQUIPMENT/TOOLS
Operating outreach vehicles and golf carts. Maintaining and
operating electronic interpretives. Ability to learn and understand
computer programs and apps. Utilize technological devices to
educate public on and off Zoo grounds. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY This
position requires walking, standing, speaking, hearing, seeing, and
interacting with the public of all ages. Driving is also required
both onsite and offsite. Lifting and carrying of up to 40 lbs. WORK
ENVIRONMENT Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a
variety of facilities and weather conditions. QUALIFICATIONS
Required Experience: Recent experience with public speaking.
Ability to recognize differing audience needs by age, interest,
demographics, learning styles and other characteristics. Experience
presenting to a variety of audiences. Education Requirements: In
the process of obtaining, or has obtained a college degree in
biology, zoology, environmental science, environmental studies,
conservation/natural resources education or related field. Must be
at least 18 years old. Required Skills and Competencies: Excellent
public speaking skills. A passion for the Seneca Park Zoo's
conservation mission. Ability to clearly and effectively
communicate with staff, Docents, guests and customers/clients.
Excellent customer service skills. Ability to learn and understand
different computer programs. Excellent time management and
problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently as well as
part of a team. Must have a valid NYS Driver's License to operate
outreach vehicles. Must be willing to be trained on handling
ambassador animals. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. Must be
comfortable working in all weather conditions including, heat,
rain, snow, and cold. Must have reliable transportation to and from
work. Ability to use proper judgement when handling animals.
