Job Description:

Contributes significantly to the research, engineering, design, and operation of diffraction grating ruling engines as

well as for new metrology systems and manufacturing equipment. Applies a blend of analytical and hands-on

engineering knowledge and skills in domains, including precision mechanical engineering, control systems,

manufacturing process development, and optical metrology. Sets up and rules master gratings on one or more of the

Richardson Gratings ruling engines: the University of Chicago ruling engine, the Mann engine, the MIT B Engine and

the MIT C Engine. Characterizes ruled master gratings and their replicas using specialized metrology instrumentation.

Trains ruling technicians concerning the set up and ruling procedures of ruling engines and trains production

technicians concerning production methods and procedures. Develops and documents specialized test methods for

testing diffraction gratings. Provides precision mechanical and opto-mechanical engineering expertise to support all

aspects of the business.

Requirements: Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (willing to accept foreign education

equivalent) plus 1 year of experience in the application of precision engineering concepts to micro-fabrication systems

and metrology equipment. Or, alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (willing to accept foreign

education equivalent) and 3 years of experience in the application of precision engineering concepts to micro-

fabrication systems and metrology equipment. Must also possess 1 year of experience in each of the following skills:

(1) Designing, maintaining, and repairing unique ruling engines on one or more of the Richardson Gratings ruling

engines: the University of Chicago ruling engine, the Mann engine, the MIT B Engine or MIT C Engine; (2) Leveraging

optical metrology and testing techniques to assess ruled grating quality and performance, including phase-measuring

interferometer, interference microscope, atomic force microscope, and ten-meter Czerny-Turner spectrograph; (3)

Maintaining and repairing stop-start and continuous motion ruling engine control systems; and, (4) Setting up and

operating, without assistance, one or more of the four (4) Richardson Gratings ruling engines and designing diamond

styluses burnishing tools to create ruled master gratings with specific performance characteristics.
